Art and Design Curriculum Rationale

Aims: Our high-quality art and design education, From the Early Foundation stage to Year 6 should engage, inspire, and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design inspired by a range of artists, architects, and designers in history.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design through the sequenced, planned lessons. Our curriculum is adapted, designed, and developed for all pupils to access it to their full potential. It explores how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity, and wealth of our diverse nation.

We believe that pupils should be able to learn from artists and art movements and have the opportunities to work with professional artists and participate in events. Pupils are able to develop their creativity and imagination through a range of artistic experiences. The pupils are introduced to a range of artists and encouraged to explore the art created by others in order to develop their appreciation of artforms from across the ages and develop their own ideas and artistic preferences. The ability to control materials, tools and techniques will enable children to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the arts.

Design and Technology Curriculum Rationale

Aims: Our Design and Technology Curriculum aims to enable children to develop the skills they need for designing and making, through a range of creative and practical activities.

From the EYFS to year 6 our curriculum develops pupil’s ability to research, investigate, analyse, and evaluate a range of products, applying their understanding and technical knowledge across a range of products and materials. Pupils will be taught to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Design and technology helps to prepare pupils for the on-going innovations and developments in our world. Pupils are encouraged to become problem solvers, combining practical skills with a design process to solve real problems. Using design and technology pupils can develop a critical understanding of its impact on the world around them.

Design and Technology brings learning to life; it is a motivating practical context for discovering English, mathematics, science, art, PSHE and Computing.
