Geography Curriculum Rationale

Aims: At Hawksmoor our teaching and learning of Geography is to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.

Our curriculum, starting in the Early Years, teaches knowledge about diverse places, people and natural and human environment together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

We ensure that the children have an understanding of themselves in their own locality in relation to the whole of the United Kingdom and other countries, significant to the community of our school. This is achieved by using world maps, teaching subject specific vocabulary and undertaking local field work.

Pupils extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area which includes a European country and North and South America. They explore a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features such as rivers, volcanoes, and natural disasters.

By the time our pupils leave Hawksmoor we expect them to be able to confidently navigate around the world using atlas, maps and digital technology and be able to use geographical vocabulary to explain human and physical differences of countries from around the world.
